Fairly recently I became familiar with this bird on the barrier beach of Martha’s Vineyard. Unlike its nesting neighbors of terns, endangered piping plovers, and black skimmers, this bird spent its time in the quiet waters of the estuary removed from the others. He is the largest North American plover.
