In 1852, army officer Lt. Brown, assigned to the Lighthouse Establishment, created the first true recognized bell buoy.

Bell buoys have always fascinated me. Their gentle deep ring when the waters are calm and the exciting one when the water is rough. Seen from a sailboat they feel certainly larger than one expects.
