I watched this family for several days. One morning, Mama mallard was gently giving instructions, the chicks eventually falling in line. At one point, she seemed to give new directions. All the chicks got out of the water, came right towards me, passed within two feet and the whole family crossed the road to the water on the other side. What a treat.
